Why I am pro-life instead of pro-choice

Op-Ed by Gini Crawford, MSW

I am pro-life for two reasons.  The first reason is, I believe when God’s Word says that God formed all of us in our mother’s womb, He did just that! (See Psalm 139:13-16.)  This means all life is sacred from conception until natural death.

I think I can assume everyone reading this would never kill a baby!  So this means our debate is not about murdering an infant, but instead when does a fetus become a human being.  I understand some of you don’t believe there is a God, or you believe He is some force that isn’t too involved with us.  Holding either of these beliefs about the concept of God would naturally make you not put much stock in the Holy Bible when it says that life starts in the womb.   I can understand why you would be pro-choice, because you have formed your own belief about when life begins.

This brings me to my second reason on why I am pro-life - science.   I believe we can all relate to what true science has discovered through advances in technology, no matter where we stand religiously.  Technology now shows us very clearly what a fetus looks like in a womb – a baby.   I have a few pictures below to defend my pro-life stand, because as you know a picture is worth a thousand words.

I want to end by saying, I would guess a number of women who are reading this have had an abortion.  I would suppose most if not all of you, are now pro-life, but would never share you have had an abortion because of the condemning responses you rightly fear.  I know on both sides of the issue (pro-life v. pro-choice) people can be very zealous.  And knowing what abortion does, why wouldn’t we be!  Yet, what happens is, the women who have had the abortions become victims of condemnation instead of recipients of forgiveness.

As pro-lifers we need to keep in mind - the Bible tells us we are all sinners and need forgiving.  Yes, God hates abortion but He hates all other sins too. Let’s exemplify how Jesus Christ would act, by being loving and caring supporters of life instead of unkind and unforgiving zealots.  When we act like condemning zealots we just drive away people who would otherwise unite with us.
